Trailer

Melbourne International Film Festival trailer, 1:25, 1993

The 'nineties work so far in this series were rarely, if at all, screened. But this final post is something of an exception. I
n 1993 I was asked to make a super 8 film trailer for the Melbourne International Film Festival which was screened several times a day for about two weeks, and then never again.

Cool type at the end.

Well that was the festival's logo so not my design and I think the idea was *ahem* inspired by Nirvana's Nevermind cover.

Haha I suppose it is something of a dérive - my self-imposed brief was to capture the parts of Melbourne the tourists never see, to paraphrase John Lydon - festival trailers so often present iconic images of their host cities. The voices were sampled from local radio and the list of languages which came from a public radio station with info about services for migrants, signify Melbourne's 'multicultural' make-up and a bit before touting 'multiculturalism' became a marketing device, also of course suggests the 'internationalism' of the festival...

Yes nice, visually a little in places like Fitzpatrick's Tail Chase but with a more sinister feel, Most of your OZ work makes the place seem rather threatening and well cold.

Don't really recall Tail Chase that well. Does this really seem sinister, threatening and cold? Hmmm, well it's not a tourist film that's for sure, but of course it's not all 'about' the place.

You can see Tale Chase here:

As I say very different "vibe". Andrew's piece has a touch of Marcel Proust about it what with its telltale tail.

Yes I see what you mean, of course I now remember that I have seen this relatively recently, alternative title: Little Dog for Michael.

"Little dog for Michael"...hah yes there is a touch of the MPDs. Did I say I bumped into Nicola the other night in period costume/disguise.

The MPDs and the MLGs - what a combo. Tell me more about the historical disguise.
